BE SUBSTANTIALLY INSURED for uninsured motorist wrecks. $10,000 PIP each wasn't enough! Our first night at the hospital was $20,000 each. PIP, or Personal Injury Protection, is the medical ins portion on the uninsured motorist coverage on an auto ins policy. The INSURED motorist gets to pay everything their insurance doesn't cover, which can be VERY costly. Settlements don't come close to paying you back.
The first four months of medical costs for EACH of us: $35,000. The only substantial support system for victims of DUI or of uninsured motorists is family. Our injuries: concussion, Mild TBI, hematoma, rotator cuff tear, SLAP tear, neck injuries, stitches in the eyelid., and my husband having to use a walker & a cane for a month. The main injury still continues: the emotional affects. Unless you have broken bones, are maimed, or death is involved, there really is no substantial support system!

http://www.dwipanel.org/   The DWI Victim's Panel (called DUI Vicitm's Panel in some areas.) sponsors meetings for those charged with DUI's to come and hear victim's stories.

I was so consumed by what had happened to my husband and I that I spent time on the Internet searching for DUI victim's rights.  The results that came up were the DWI Victim's Panel, MADD, and other than that, just an extensive list of attorneys that represent the DUI driver.  I saw the contact us link on the Panel's site & wrote an email.  Shirley Anderson wrote me back.  In the long run, we ended up attending three of the Panel's meetings in December that year.  It impacted us hugely.  Yes, even our bodies felt like we'd been hit by a truck.  We were reminded all the time in everything we did of our injuries, which affected us significantly emotionally.  But we were alive.  We weren't in a wheelchair for life.  We have all of our limbs.  Pain we can endure.  We were fortunate, blessed!
